whispers in the city: reflections on Palm Sunday

Who is this? The whisper running through the city.
Who is this? As they strain to see, crane their necks, jostle to join the crowd.
Who is this? As the people surge forward, before him and after him.
He rides on a donkey, into his city:
the return of her King.
Hosanna! they holler, naming him
Son of David!
Jubilant at his coming, they spread down their cloaks for his passing, branches from the trees...

"Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your King comes to you,
righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

(Zechariah 9:9)

What will happen now?

What will this King do?

How will he redeem us?

If only they knew.
If only they knew how quickly the cries of the crowd would change.
